32 TROON PRIVÉ MAGAZINE TROON PRIVÉ MAGAZINE 33 RESPECTING THE PAST while embracing the future is a tricky balance for any private golf club but especially for one whose roots stretch back more than a century Springdale Golf Club in Princeton New Jersey is an example of how to handle both successfully Occupying 100 acres adjacent to the campus of Princeton University the clubs original 18 hole course was completed by Princeton graduate Gerard Lambert on a former farm site in 1915 But it was William Flynn best known for his 1931 redesign of five time U S Open venue Shinnecock Hills Golf Club whose artistic revision of Springdales very walkable routing in 1927 created an enjoyable layout that has stood the test of time Despite measuring just 6380 yards from the tips Flynns design remains far from being a pushover thanks primarily to his use of sharply undulating greens Thats the main defense of the course since its not overly long said General Manager Ryan Stemsrud It definitely has tricky greens where you do not want to be on the wrong side of the hole Most everything breaks away from the Tower PRIVÉ SPOTLIGHT CLASSIC PAST BRIGHT FUTURE SPRINGDALE GOLF CLUB IN NEW JERSEY By Tom Mackin
